PANAMA'S FIRST BOOT CONTRACT UP AND RUNNING Biwater Plc's Panama subsidiary, Aguas de Panama, has started operations of the Laguna Alta bulk potable water plant, capable of supplying some 20 million gallons/day to 350,000 residents in Panama. Laguna Alta is the first design-build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) project in Panama's drinking water sector and will serve the residents of the La Chorrera, Arraijan and Capira areas, west of the Panama Canal. Laguna Alta will supply a minimum of 15 million gallons/day for the first three years of the 30-year concession, and 20 million gallons/day for the remaining 27 years. Construction of the reinforced concrete intake and treatment plant took approximately two years once the land purchase and easement guarantees were available, and employed some 200 people during the peak construction period.
