A new control device to measure total dissolved solids loading in a water stream has been developed. The FlowMatix DSLM instrument converts flow and TDS into total loading values. The importance of this technology is its use in determining the dissolved solids loading entering treatment systems such as ion exchange or other removal systems that are limited by total solids loading. Applications include raw water treatment where the water fluxuates in TDS or flow over the time of treatment. The FlowMatix unit monitors and displays the total loading at any point in the service run, allowing operators to schedule change out, or regeneration of the treatment systems.
In other applications, recycled water is monitored to indicate the available service run life of the treatment system. This allows operators to schedule regeneration by providing advance warning for availability of regeneration chemicals, waste storage and treatment, and personnel availability. The system is now installed and operating at two major industrial manufacturers’ monitoring plating waste water recycling operations.
The system is also an important tool in determining the best and/or most cost-effective regeneration cycle and, by charting the history of previous regenerations, is an indicator of maintenance problems such as fouled or worn media in the system.
The FlowMatix system displays accumulated total loading in weight, as well as flow and running TDS. Also displayed is totalized flow and runtime. Adjustable preset alarm limits are available for total loading, flow and TDS. Reset functions for end-of-cycle are included. Correction factors for different pipe sizes, units of measure and limit settings are available from a setup screen in the instrument.
All readings are displayed on a back-lit LCD screen refreshed at 10s intervals. A membrane keypad on the front of the instrument is provided for inputs. Two relay outputs are available for alarm functions as standard. The instrument is housed in a rugged PVC housing suitable for any environmental installation.
The unit is being manufactured and distributed by Sirco Industrial, a manufacturer and distributor of products for industrial water treatment and specializing in industrial water recycling and reuse.
