Kemira Kemwater - A Complete Water Treatment Solution

Kemwater offers products and applications for effective chemical purification of drinking water and wastewater treatment worldwide. The use of chemical precipitation is the cheapest and most effective treatment process, and the most environmentally considerate method according to total life cycle assessments.

Kemwater comprises a network of companies and production plants, associated companies, sales offices and licensees across the planet. We provide custom-designed solutions that can be applied both locally and globally.

APPLICATIONS WITH TOTAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR WATER PURIFICATION

In cases where a treatment process is necessary, chemical precipitation is the method which most effectively precipitates and binds undesirable substances. The water is precipitated with aluminium or iron salts, after which the flocs are separated by sedimentation or flotation. Filtration, pH-adjustment and, in some cases, disinfection is carried out before the water is distributed into the water mains.

DRINKING WATER TREATMENT

Chemical treatment of raw water for the production of drinking water is therefore of great importance. Kemira Kemwater has 100 years of experience as a producer of inorganic coagulants. Today, Kemira Kemwater is the leading producer of coagulants based on aluminium and/or iron raw materials.

Kemira Kemwater’s extensive product range makes it possible to achieve the best treatment effect at low cost.

Coagulants specially designed for drinking water treatment improve the final water quality. Kemwater PAX and PAX-XL are polyaluminium chlorides / sulphates / nitrates with special performance which provide several advantages compared to conventional staple products:

  • Excellent particle reduction
  • Reduction of organic matter
  • Low dosing
  • Low production of sludge
  • Low alkalinity consumption
  • Low residual aluminium
  • Broad pH-interval for coagulation
  • Rapid floc formation

INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT

Industrial wastewater (effluents) differs from common municipal wastewater. Whereas the nature of municipal wastewater is relatively constant, the diversity of industrial wastewater must be investigated for each type of effluent.

There are several types of industrial wastewater, originating from processes in:

  • Mining industry
  • Food and dairy industries, slaughter houses and breweries
  • Pulp & paper industry
  • Steel industry (pickling and electroplating baths)
  • Textile industry (dyeing)
  • Petroleum refinery
  • Surface water treatment chemicals production

MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT

Kemira Kemwater has been working with municipal wastewater treatment for the past 40 years. During this period we have not only enhanced our know-how in this area but also evolved tailor-made products and processes. Through chemical treatment, the efficiency of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and the quality of the treated water are increased. At the same time it is possible to decrease the energy demand on the plant. In general, coagulants can be applied in four different ways.

ODOUR CONTROL

Waste water can be transported over long distances. With an extensive sewer system the risk is great for septic conditions in the sewage water, where the sulphate is transformed by bacteria into sulphides. This is a very toxic substance producing unpleasant odour in and close to the sewer system. Hydrogen sulphide can also be transformed into sulphuric acid, causing corrosion to the sewer system resulting in leakage.

Kemira Kemwater supplies a variety of products for odour control. Nitrate products (Anaerite), ferric salts (Kemwater PIX), ferric nitrates (Kemwater FIN) and Kemwater PAN, a polyaluminium nitrate. A dosing control system is provided to avoid under- and overdosing in the sewer.

SLUDGE TREATMENT

Sludge produced in water treatment processes is both a waste product and a resource. Normally, the sludge is contaminated by heavy metals and sometimes by organic micro pollutants. This makes it necessary to treat the sludge before the valuable products can be recovered. For several years, Kemira has conducted scientific studies, seeking the best method for utilising the sludge.

As a result of an innovative development we can offer Kemicond, our new sludge conditioning process, that changes the properties of the sludge dramatically.
