The Water Variable: Producing Enough Food in a Climate Insecure World
FAO projects that the world food requirement is set to double from current level by 2050 including an increase in grain production from two billion to four billion tons.
According to the estimate, current food production consumes more than 2,500 billion cubic metres of water a year – 75% of total freshwater consumption.
The demand will have a strong bearing in the allocation of water resources to the sector, especially when more than 900 million people in developing countries remain undernourished.
The white paper summarises food production and food security trends and how climate change could impact food production.
