Why Sanitation and Water Supply are Important to Growth and Development in Cambodia

This paper assesses the progress of Cambodia towards meeting its water and sanitation target.

According to data compiled by the WHO / UNICEF joint monitoring programme (JMP), Cambodia is making good progress in urban water and sanitation, however, rural sanitation still has a long way to go.

Estimates say Cambodia has seven years to raise rural sanitation coverage from 18% to 53% to meet the millennium development goal (MDG) target or from 18% to 30% to meet the Cambodia-set MDG target.

It is estimated that Cambodia requires a total expenditure of $970m to meet the water and sanitation MDG targets, of which, $664m is required for sanitation.
