Integrating Physical and Human Management Systems for Effective Water Resources Management
This white paper, published by the Delft University of Technology and the Hague University of Applied Sciences, discusses integrated water resources management (IWRM), which is an essential framework for the sustainable management of water resources.
The concept encourages a holistic and participatory approach to management, which acknowledges the multidimensional character of water in time and space and across disciplines and stakeholders.
It presents a two-mode, four-level hierarchical framework, which will aid in operationalising IWRM. The value of the framework is demonstrated through a case study focusing on water management issues within the minerals industry.
The paper also discusses the importance of aligning responsibilities for water systems with the appropriate level of complexity in human systems.
