Energy Implications of Bottled Water

23 August 2010

As the use of bottled water continues to increase around the world, it leaves a huge energy footprint. This white paper estimates the energy required for production, bottling processes and transportation.

The paper estimates that 54 million barrels of oil, or 0.33% of total US primary energy consumption, was used to produce the 33 billion litres of bottled water consumed in the US in 2007.

Processing water requires as much as 2,000 times the energy of producing tap water.
