The Geospatial Dimensions of Critical Infrastructure and Emergency Response

13 August 2010

The US's National Infrastructure Protection Plan considers the water sector to be one of the 18 federally identified critical infrastructures that provides services essential to public health, industry and commercial units.

Critical water infrastructure is inter-linked with gas, oil pipeline, electric, communications, and transportation infrastructures which provide the foundation to quality of life and economic well-being and overall security.

Although total protection of critical water infrastructure is unfeasible, emergency managers need to devise strategies to better reduce the impact of natural or man-made disasters.
