Thiess-CH2M HILL joint venture selected for Western Australia water recycling plant

Infrastructure company Thiess and engineering, construction and operations company CH2M HILL have been selected by Western Australia’s Water Corporation to build an advanced water recycling plant (AWRP) in Craigie, north of Perth.

The $80m project has been undertaken to improve Perth’s potable water supply, with treated wastewater from the Beenyup Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) will be introduced by the AWRP into aquifers.

Thiess WA/NT general manager Stuart Crofts said: "The contract carries Thiess’ successful tradition of taking on Water Corporation projects for the last 15 years. Thiess was part of the W2W Alliance that built the trial recycling plant at the Beenyup facility, in addition to upgrading and expanding the Beenyup and Woodman Point WWTPs. We are currently designing and constructing the East Rockingham WWTP in an alliance with the Water Corporation and SKM-Jacobs."

The design, construction, commission, performance testing and validation of the AWRP will be done for an initial operating capacity of 14gal a year, alongside flexibility for expanding the operating capacity to 28gal a year.

Thiess’ national power and water manager Rob Evans said: "This contract is the fourth in the water sector to be awarded to Thiess this year and follows on from the WP3 Capital Framework and Greenvale Dam Safety Upgrade project for Melbourne Water, and the East Rockingham Wastewater Treatment Plant for the Water Corporation."

The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2015.
