Aecon, McNally to Build Canadian Water Tunnel

3 June 2011

The Aecon Group and McNally International joint venture has won a contract worth $150m from Metro Vancouver for the construction of a water supply tunnel under the Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada.

The joint venture will sink two shafts and excavate 1,000m of an earth pressure balanced tunnel with precast segmental lining from Surrey to Coquitlam under the river.

The project also includes setting up two shaft sites, the installation of a welded steel pipe lining and the construction of two valve chambers.

The contract is part of Greater Vancouver's water transmission system risk management programme and will replace the older pipeline with a new tunnel and water pipe.

The work will be complete by 2014.
