UK Environment Agency reveals top ten most-improved rivers
The UK Environment Agency has released a list of the UK's ten most-improved rivers that have undergone upgrades.
The rivers include the River Wandle, Thames, Wear, Stour, Darent, Dee, Nar, Taff and Stour.
The agency worked with farmers, businesses and water companies, undertook habitat improvement projects and implemented tighter regulations for polluting industries to reduce contamination levels.
The work is in line with the UK's goal of meeting EU targets for the quality and ecology of its rivers and lakes by 2015.
The agency is seeking £18m from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and its partner Natural England to ensure more rivers meet the EU targets this year.
