New York Pledges $100m to Reduce Nitrogen

08 March 2010

New York City, USA, will spend $100m installing new nitrogen control systems at four wastewater treatment plants.

The four plants discharge 40,000lb of nitrogen every day and the city hopes to halve this amount in the next decade.

The agreement is a part of the greater PlaNYC agenda, which was reached between New York City, New York state and environmental groups, according to ens-newswire.com.

A further $15m will be spent on restoration projects in the Jamaica Bay region.

The City Department of Environmental Protection will complete all upgrades by 2017.

Natural Resources Defence Council executive director Peter Lehner said the move proves government and environmentalists can work together to devise green solutions.
