The new OMR107.6m ($279m) Sur Central Water Desalination Plant in Oman has been opened, providing water for the Al-Sharqiyah region.

Built by the government of Oman, the project has secured OMR58m ($150m) from the private sector.

The plant has a production capacity of 80 million litres and comprises a filtration unit, water collection tankers, chemical process unit, monitoring and control system, operation building, 30 shore wells and 10,100 membranes for desalination.

Oman's Chairman of the Public Authority for Electricity and Water Mohammed bin Abdullah al Mahrouqi said the plant was environmentally friendly and described it as state-of-the-art.

In addition, the Government of Oman has constructed a water supply network measuring 320km to link the water desalination plant with the districts of the Al-Sharqiyah region.

About 15 water tankers with a capacity of 800 to 6,000 cubic metres have been built and five major pumping stations, stations to supply water transporting tankers, and a control and monitoring system have been added.
