Australia Gets First Blackwater Recycling System

Australia’s first permanent blackwater recycling system will be installed at an office building in Sydney by AquaCell Technologies.

Recycled and pumped blackwater will be used for cooling towers or for toilet flushing, thereby saving 100,000 litres of water a day.

The premises gained a licence to access sewer water for blackwater recycling from the New South Wales (NSW) government.

Recycled water will not be used for drinking and will have to meet NSW Department of Health standards.

The NSW government hopes to recycle 12% of the city’s precious water supply by 2015, and wants blackwater recycling to become the norm in buildings, according to bigpondnews.com.

The 28-storey development is co-owned by Dexus, Dexus Wholesale Property Fund and Cbus. It is being constructed by Grocon and is due to be complete in May 2011.
