The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $39.4m grant to fund a water supply and sanitation project in Liberia.
The fund will be used to provide drinking water and sanitation facilities on a sustainable basis to rural and urban dwellers.
As a part of the its Millennium Development Goals, the Liberian Government aims to halve the population without access to water and sanitation facilities by 2015.
The fund will increase Liberia's water supply coverage to 50% from 25% and sanitation coverage to 40% from 15% by the end of 2012.
This is the first water and sanitation project funded by the AfDB in Liberia.
It will be an extension of the ongoing Monrovia Water Supply and Sanitation Rehabilitation Project (MWSSRP), funded by the UK's Department of International Development (DFID) and managed by the AfDB.
