Siemens, Windesal Propose Wind-Powered Desalination Plants

Siemens and Windesal have proposed to set up 20 wind-powered desalination plants on South Australia’s coastline stretching from Ceduna to Robe, to the cost of $1bn.

The companies have also announced a memorandum of understanding for a proposed plant at Port Pirie in the Spencer Gulf in South Australia.

The hub of the project will be at Port Pirie, according to www.abc.net.au

Company officials said once cleared, the plant will be operational within six to 12 months.

The plants will integrate wind power, diesel and desalinated water into one remotely based, water-purifying solution for regional areas.

Brine from desalination plants could be used to grow algae, which will be used as biofuels in the plants.

Company officials plan to export water to Indonesia from the plants.
