Ghana to Increase Rural Water Coverage to 63%

Ghana is to increase water coverage in rural areas to 63% from 59% this year in order to meet the UN’s Millennium Development Goal of 76% by 2015.

The Ghana Government said it will set up new water systems and renovate the existing ones to accelerate the provision and sustainability of water facilities in rural areas and small towns.

So far this year the government, through the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, has already completed the installation of 588 boreholes, rehabilitated 40 boreholes, installed 18 pipe schemes and completed 17 hand-dug wells.

It will complete the drilling of 1,645 boreholes and rehabilitate 50 distressed ones this year, according to ghanabusinessnews.com.

Government statistics estimate that about 30% of the country’s water systems will be defunct within five years.
