Revenues of the global ultraviolet water and wastewater disinfection systems market will reach $629m by 2015 from $388m in 2008, according to a study by Frost & Sullivan.
The growth was attributed to new European legislations such as the Bathing Water Directive and the Drinking Water Directive.
The study said some industries, such as pharmaceuticals, life sciences and semiconductors, prefer non-chemical based disinfection methods, pushing demand for UV disinfection systems.
Several countries have given direction to control the amount of chlorine discharged from wastewater plants, forcing plants to go for de-chlorination processes, which will also lead to the adoption of UV disinfection, the report said.
The Texas-based research firm says demand for UV will grow with increasing water demand and scarcity of potable water across the world.
