UK Plans Thames Sewer Project

A £3.6bn ($5.5bn) sewerage project to halt pollution of the River Thames in London, England, has been unveiled.

The 32km Thames Tunnel will be dug from west to east London, collecting sewage discharge triggered by rainfall.

The work also includes building the £600m ($927m) Lee Tunnel, a £675m ($1bn) upgrade of five major sewage systems, installing water meters at 370,000 properties and replacing aging Victorian water pipes.

The project, expected to be complete in 2020, hopes to reduce the 39 million tons of raw sewage that pours into the River Thames every year.
