The US Environmental Protection Agency has ordered a $60m clean-up of rocket fuel-polluted groundwater at the Aerojet Superfund Site in Sacramento County, California, US.
The groundwater underneath and around the former aerospace facility has been polluted with several compounds, including very high levels of perchlorate, a main component of rocket fuel.
Aerojet will contain the underground plume to prevent it from spreading into nearby rivers and streams, and will also treat the groundwater within the site's boundaries.
EPA also ordered Aerojet to fund and construct a water treatment facility to limit water contamination and purify 25 million gallons of groundwater daily.
