Alstom to use Altantium’s innovative water treatment solution in hydropower equipment

French firm Alstom has signed an agreement with Israel based Altantium to use its ultraviolet rays (UV) based waster treatment solution in hydropower equipment.

Aquatic species including algae, mussels, bacteria, etc, pose to be an issue with the hydropower industry, which increases the cost of maintenance.

Produced in the auxiliary water circuits, they multiply, thereby slowing down water flow or blocking the installed pipes.

Atlantium has developed a new water treatment technique which uses ultraviolet rays to eliminate microorganisms produced in the auxiliary water circuits of equipment (Balance of Plant, cooling systems, etc.).

The water treatment process uses ultraviolet rays which are especially used in the pharmaceuticals and chemicals industries. The rays are diffused by a lamp embedded in Plexiglas tubes in order to prevent the reproduction or multiplication of the persistent aquatic species.

Besides being environmental friendly, the process is also economic, thereby offering the advantage and ease of maintenance.

Alstom Renewable Energies Hydro senior vice president Jacques Hardelay said: "With this agreement, Alstom will enable its customers to benefit from an innovative, low-cost, environmentally respectful technique that has already proven itself in other industries and consolidates its position as the leader in services provision in the hydropower market."

Atlantium CEO and president Benjamin Khan said: "This collaboration will provide Alstom’s customers with a unique, chemical-free and field-proven solution for their mussels and macro-fouling challenges."
