Black & Veatch wins contract to upgrade two wastewater treatment plants in UK

US based engineering and construction company Black & Veatch has been awarded a £56m contract for upgrading waste water treatment facilities at Chadderton, and Royton in Greater Manchester, UK.

The project, which is likely to extend over three years, is aimed at improving river water quality in the River Irk and its tributaries.

Under the terms of the contract, Black and Veatch will be responsible for design, procurement, construction, commissioning and operation of the upgraded wastewater treatment facilities at Chadderton and Royton.

Awarded by United Utilities Water, the contract will involve decommissioning of waste water treatment processes at Royton and construction of extra storage tanks to hold increased quantity of storm flows at both the sites.

Increased storage facilities will be able to reduce discharges into the river, thereby helping it to meet the River Water Quality standards.

Black & Veatch will also set up an underground sewage pipeline that will enable transfer of the wastes to the Oldham wastewater treatment works at Chadderton, located nearly 4.5km away.

The two waste water treatment facilities in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham have been serving the town and its surroundings since 1900. The existing ones are too old and small to keep up with the stringent new wastewater standards set in Europe.
