A report has called for the Canadian government to engage in more collaborative models of governance to ensure the sustainability of its water supply.
Published by the National Round Table (NRT), the report on the environment and the economy points out that the federal government must initiate a process for state and local government to collaborate on developmental policies.
It also stressed the need for local governments to publish the Water Outlook and explore the use of water pricing for the natural resource sector, which is Canada's largest water user with 86%.
The country's water intake is also expected to increase due to the economic growth forecast in this sector
The report states that new water policies could improve water conservation and efficiency to govern sustainable water use by the natural resources sectors. Collaborative governance could help the federal government make decisions for sustainable water allocation.
NRT is an independent policy advisory agency that advises the Canadian Government on sustainable development solutions.
