Cornwall Wastewater Treatment Plant in Canada receives $55.5m upgrade

Cornwall Wastewater Treatment Plant in Ontario, Canada, has received a $55.5m capital investment upgrade, which was funded by the city, province and the Canadian Government.

Each of the three authorities contributed $18.5m for the project.

The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario offered the funding via the Green Infrastructure Fund.

Upgrade works at the facility continued over two years.

The facility is now equipped with advanced technologies and uses ultraviolet technology and advanced sludge thickening, filtering and screening processes for wastewater treatment offering higher levels of disinfection.

Besides improving the quality of the wastewater effluents, the upgrade has also increased the capacity of the plant.

The project is also helpful for environmental conservation and can help reduce sewage overflows into St Lawrence River.

Member of Provincial Parliament for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell Grant Crack said: "Our government continues building Ontario up by enhancing economic growth and addressing critical infrastructure needs with long-term strategic investments.

"The fully upgraded plant will not only protect the environment, but will also ensure the health and safety of residents in Cornwall today, and for generations to come."

City of Cornwall Mayor Bob Kilger said: "The upgrade of the Cornwall Wastewater Treatment Plant represents the largest construction project ever undertaken by the City of Cornwall.

"In addition to the numerous environmental benefits, this project also places Cornwall in a strong position for future growth and expansion."

Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MP Guy Lauzon said: "Effective wastewater systems deliver numerous benefits for our communities and our environment.

"They ensure the health and well-being of our residents, safeguard our waterways and preserve our ecosystem.

"Our government is pleased to have contributed to this important initiative that is creating jobs and economic growth here in the Cornwall region, while helping to protect the St Lawrence River."
