Degrémont wins wastewater treatment plant contract in Doha, Qatar

Suez Environnement subsidiary Degrémont, along with its Japanese partner Marubeni, has won a €178m contract from Qatar’s Public Works Authority, Ashghal, for expansion of the Doha West wastewater treatment and recycling plant.

France-based utility firm Suez Environnement will have a €94m stake in the contract for providing services.

The proposed expansion is expected to increase the daily capacity of the water treatment plant by an additional 105,000m³, to serve the city of Doha, which has a population of around 1,040,000.

Suez Environnement will be responsible for operations at the facility until 2020, the company said.

Situated 20km west of the city, the plant has been in service since 2010.

The new contract for Suez Environnement follows two previous contracts signed for the plant’s design, construction and ten-year operation in 2005.

The plant had a daily capacity of 135,000m³, which had been further expanded in 2011 to 175,000m³ in order to serve the needs of 650,000 residents.

Degrémont CEO Rémi Lantier said: "We are proud of Ashghal’s renewed trust for this Doha West plant expansion after having built the two prior ones.

"This new contract acknowledges our capacity to offer, deliver and then operate efficient facilities tailored to the local challenges of population growth and protection of resources."

The plant uses a secondary biologic treatment, followed by a tertiary treatment with ultra-filtration membranes and Smartrack system, which facilitates reuse of treated water for irrigational purposes in green spaces and market gardens, and also to replenish groundwater levels.
