Emerson Process Management has been selected by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) to install its Ovation technology at MWRA's Deer Island wastewater treatment plant, replacing its outdated human machine interface systems.
The Deer Island treatment plant is part of MWRA's $3.8bn programme to protect Boston Harbor against pollution from the metropolitan area's sewer systems.
Ovation will manage and integrate the plant's systems and processes, managing an average of 30,000 input / output points.
The processes include influent pumping, grit screening, primary clarification, oxygen-activated sludge secondary treatment, secondary treatment clarification, sludge digestion, sludge thickening, odour control, disinfection and effluent discharge.
MWRA's process control manager David Duest said that the technology will help MWRA to overcome the challenges of protecting human health and Boston Harbor, and will comply with the federal Clean Water Act and Massachusetts' environmental regulations.
