GE to install mobile water filtration system at GVEA’s power plant in Alaska

US based Golden Valley Electric Association (GVEA) has awarded a contract to General Electric’s Power & Water unit (GE Power & Water) to install a mobile water filtration at its coal-fired energy facility in Healy, Alaska.

The power facility is presently undergoing a planned outage to allow upgrades to its water treatment system and environmental controls.

GE will install its mobile water filtration system at the facility for a period of 90 days.

GVEA power supply vice president Lynn Thompson said: "Having access to clean water for our Healy plant is a crucial step in supporting our ongoing investment in upgrading our environmental controls and replacing older equipment to achieve a successful restart this coming summer.

"This is an important, multi-million dollar project and GE’s partnership is key to maintaining uptime."

Upgrades are being done in advance to commissioning of a second unit at the power facility, which presently has single operational unit.

Located around 300m to the south of the Arctic Circle, the dual-unit facility will have a combined generation capacity of 80MW when operational.

GE mobile water treatment system to be used at the plant will include a trailer containing various filter vessels and a single reverse osmosis (RO) unit having capacity to treat 100 gallons of water per-minute.

Following the RO process, the purified water will be treated further by ion-exchange tanks to make it suitable to be used as boiler feedwater at the plant.

GE has also upgraded the RO system with an integral product water recycling system to eliminate the use of the ion-exchange tanks, as much as possible.
