28 November 2011

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a $452m loan to Brazil, to improve sewage collection at Baía de Guanabara located in Rio de Janeiro state.

The 25-year term loan will help the Rio de Janeiro government advance a programme aimed at expanding the sewage collection to 80% of the state's population by 2018.

Work will include installation of sewerage collectors and treatment systems, and investments to improve public services offered by different state bodies.

The work will also include promotion of sustainable sanitation policies in the municipalities.

Once complete, around 359,000 households are expected to gain access to sewage collection, benefiting 1.68 million people.
