IDB provides water loan to Republic of Trinidad and Tobago

1 November 2011

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a loan of $50m to improve the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago's wastewater infrastructure services and reduce contamination along the Caroni River Basin.

The project will be delivered by the nation's national water and sewerage authority (WASA) with an aim to provide wastewater treatment for 9,100 households.

WASA will upgrade a number of malfunctioning or abandoned wastewater treatment plants in the three sub-catchments draining in the Caroni River Basin.

Work will involve interconnecting seven treatment plants with integrated systems that will draw their wastewaters into a number of larger plants.

Around 13km of sewers and pipes will also be laid as part of the five-year operation to complement the works on the wastewater treatment plants.
