Iran adopts new technology to treat household wastewater for use in farms

New technology has been adopted in Iran which can enable treat household wastewater and convert it to be used for agricultural purposes.

Iran’s Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology secretary Mostafa Qane’ei was cited by Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) as saying that the project has been completed by domestic specialists who were seeking water treatment solutions in co-ordination with Headquarters for Developing Biotechnology.

Besides farming, such treated wastewater from residential complexes can be used for irrigation in adjacent greenhouses, along with parks or for other green spaces.

Mostafa Qane’ei said: "The technology will make it possible for the country to greatly reduce the drinking water that is usually wasted for such purposes."

The technology, which has been identified as a conservation measure for drinking water, is already in use in developed nations, he added.

The researchers have negotiated with Tehran Municipality in order to encourage the use of this advanced technology in the country’s capital.

Reduction in water supplies and possible rationing in the summer have been declared in Iran in May this year.

The Middle Eastern country has been suffering from chronic water shortages, owing to drastic reduction in precipitation and depletion of ground water reserves.

Deputy Interior Minister Esmaeil Najjar was cited by state-owned news agency Press TV as saying that over 500 Iranian cities are coping to survive shortfalls in drinking water.
