31 January 2012

Monadelphous Group has secured water and transmission pipeline construction contracts from global miner Rio Tinto, which will be implemented in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Under the terms of the contract, Monadelphous has agreed to build and install a potable water supply system for Rio Tinto's Coastal Waters project in Bungaroo Valley.

The potable water supply system includes a bore field, approximately 15km of collector main and 87km of transfer pipeline and a transfer pump station.

The system will have the capacity to deliver 10Gl per year of potable water from the Bungaroo Valley to the West Pilbara Supply Scheme at Millstream, Western Australia.

Monadelphous plans to commence work at the water project in the first quarter of 2012; the project is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2013.

In September 2011, Rio Tinto announced plans to invest $310m to ensure a sustainable water supply for its iron ore operations in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Monadelphous managing director Rob Velletri said: "These contracts support our objective of sustainable growth through the continued expansion of our infrastructure business and they build on our long-term relationships with blue chip customers."

Monadelphous stated that its latest contracts take the total value of new work secured by Monadelphous in this year to more than $1.5bn.

Australia-based Monadelphous is an engineering group providing services to the resources, energy and infrastructure industry sectors.
