MWH Global to undertake Cary/Apex water facility upgrades in North Carolina

MWH Global will carry out the upgrades at the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility in North Carolina, US, under a contract awarded by the town of Cary.

The company will construct additional treatment units for sediment removal, filtration and ozonisation. It will also upgrade the chemical feed systems and the laboratory and administration buildings.

The work is scheduled to be completed in May 2016. The expansion will increase the treatment plant’s daily capacity from 40 million gallons to 56 million gallons.

MWH Constructors president Blair Lavoie said: "Not only will this plant expansion provide valuable drinking water for the community for many years, it will also provide jobs for the local economy over the next 24 months."

Located six miles from Jordan Lake, the facility is jointly owned and operated by the towns of Cary and Apex. It draws water from the reservoir, which is part of the Cape Fear River Basin.

The works are being undertaken under the phase 3 expansion of the project. The facility was originally completed in 1993. The first two phases of expansion were completed by 2002.

Phase 1 of the project increased the original treatment capacity by 30,000m³pd and phase 2 by 60,000m³pd.

Phase 3 is being undertaken to meet water demand through 2035.

The facility won the national Director’s Award for water safety in 2004, being only the second plant in North Carolina to do so.
