New Zealand Government funds Wellington freshwater modelling project

Greater Wellington Regional Council has received NZ$100,000 ($83,392) from the New Zealand Government for modelling a freshwater project.

The funding has been provided by the New Zealand Government’s Community Environment Fund to improve water management services in the region.

The regional council is in charge of the collaborative project, which is estimated to cost NZ$1.6m ($1.2m).

Models will be designed to help water users and councils to make improved predictions about land and water management services. It will also help in developing competencies for tackling water management challenges by targeting resources.

New Zealand Environment Minister Amy Adams said: "There are so many different models available, each with its own strengths or shortcomings.

"This project will get all the modellers together to determine the most appropriate to use in specific circumstances or under specific conditions.

"The project will support a better, more community-focussed process for making water quality decisions.

"It will also help determine water quality limits for the Wellington region as required under the government’s national policy statement for freshwater."
