New York to reduce combined sewer overflows

24 October 2011

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) have reached a draft agreement to reduce combined sewer overflows into water bodies in New York, US.

According to the agreement, NYCDEP will invest $187m in green infrastructure projects by 2015.

The investment will help to reduce the amount of stormwater from entering the city's combined sewer system from 10% of available impervious surfaces in combined sewer drainage areas by 2030.

The city will spend an additional $5.15m on environmental programmes, including the construction and monitoring of green infrastructure demonstration projects in the Newtown Creek and Bronx River drainage basins and water quality sampling in the Hutchinson River.

The city will also complete work on $1.6bn of gray infrastructure projects.
