The Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) has secured an operations and maintenance (O&M) contract for the two regional drinking water systems in Canada.

It has been awarded by the respective boards of management from the Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System and the Elgin Area Primary Water Supply System.

Under the five-year $35.1m deal, OCWA has agreed to operate the water treatment and transmission systems of the two systems. These will provide clean drinking water to 14 municipalities between Lake Huron and Lake Erie through a network of treatment plants, pipelines, pumping stations and reservoirs.

Al Edmondson, chairman of the Lake Huron Water Board, said: "This has been a carefully executed process, fair, equitable and transparent, assuring us a capable operating partner. We thank our evaluation team for their diligence."

OCWA won the operating contract from the boards of the two systems through a year-long public procurement process.
