New wastewater treatment plant in Ontario, Canada

A new $28m, 13,700ft² wastewater treatment plant has been unveiled in Mississippi Mills, eastern Ontario, Canada.

The plant has an average daily flow of 4,700m³/day with a maximum daily flow of 14,100m³/day, and is an extended aeration wastewater treatment facility able to serve 8,100 people without upgrades.

Mississippi Mills director of roads and public works Troy Dunlop said, "Today, you are seeing two years of construction and ten years of planning. The new plant will serve the community until 2031."

Pakenham Ward councillor Denzil Ferguson said, "We have brought this project in on budget and on time."

The project received equal funded between the federal and provincial governments and the municipality.

Mayor John Levi said that the new plant sets the stage for future development and expansion of the town.

"This project is on time and on budget and that is typically unheard of and very rare these days," said Levi.

"It gives us pride as it is one of the most modern facilities and in the top five in all of Ontario as it is built to the latest technology.

Member of Parliament for Carleton-Mississippi Mills Gordon O’Connor said that during this period of fiscal restraint, Canadians rightly expect their tax dollars to be spent wisely for projects.

"That is why the federal government targeted infrastructure funds towards projects like this which benefit the community for the long-term," said O’Connor.

"This plant will enable Almonte to continue to grow and thrive in the years ahead."
