Oxford-based Nominet and Love Hz introduce innovative trial for enhanced flood detection

Nominet R&D and wireless network consultancy Love Hz have begun a pioneering trial of using Internet of Things (IoT) for detection of potential floods in the UK.

Oxford-based Nominet has collaborated with Love Hz for the pilot application aiming to create a localised early warning system for floods in the country for the first time.

Under the pilot, Nominet’s new TV white space network (TVWS) will be used to provide wireless connectivity for the sensors, while the installations will be completed by Love Hz.

The trial for IoT aims to connect 30 billion devices by 2020.

Around 30 sensors will be used to monitor water levels in the streams, groundwater and Thames basin and Cherwell rivers, to detect any flood indications.

More sensors will be incorporated by the local Oxford community later for a more detailed analysis.

The new TVWS began with the installation of a link between Oxford city centre and the floodplain.

Advanced technologies, such as ultrasonic distance measuring and digital TV broadcasting, will be used to collect comprehensive data on the behaviour of local flood water.

Nominet R&D director Adam Leach said: "Oxford has already had major issues with flooding this year and it’s great to be able to apply the emerging technologies that we are working on in Nominet R&D, such as TVWS, to offer wireless connectivity over large distances to tackle old problems.

"The sensors will measure the water levels in the local area in real time and send the data instantly over the internet, allowing users to get the most up-to-date picture of the affected areas.

"This partnership between us and Love Hz illustrates the exciting possibilities of the IoT; it’s a really practical way to use it to help communities prepare for and effectively manage emergencies."
