Qatar new sewage treatment works becomes operational

The Doha North Sewage Treatment Works (STW) has become operational in Qatar, with a capacity to treat up to 245,000m³ of sewage per day.

The QAR3.63bn ($995.8m) plant, located in Umm Salal Ali, 25km to the North of Doha, is anticipated to serve over 900,000 people by the year 2020.

The plant is the first in Qatar to use techniques such as ultrafiltration and ultra-violet technology to treat the sewage water.

Phase I of the project included the construction of the main treatment plant for the reception and treatment of sewage.

Using the ultra-membrane filtration technique, the plant separates large molecules and small granules from the water to produce quality reclaimed water for reuse in irrigation purposes.

The operations at Doha North STW begun after a full year of inspection and testing processes conducted by the Qatari Civil Defense and other entities.

Construction on the phase II of the project is currently underway, which includes the construction of a thermal drying plant (TDP).

The TDP includes four thermal dryers, which are currently being tested using sludge generated at the Doha North STW and the Doha West STW.

Two of the thermal dryers are expected to be handed over in Q2 of 2016, while the other two are expected to be handed over in Q3 of 2016.

The Doha North STW has an odor control system and a built-in buffer zone that includes 95,000 trees, as well as picnic areas and a bird-watching lagoon.

Keppel Seghers Engineering Singapore has been awarded the design, build and operation contract for the plant.
