The National Water Company (NWC) has signed an agreement to establish a tertiary sewage purification plant in Saudi Arabia with Al-Arrab Company, PWT German Company and ELF Austrian Company.
The project includes the implementation of tertiary sewage treatment, as well as cogeneration of electrical and thermal energy.
NWC intends to convert sites of sewage treatment facilities to one site containing three plants for producing water with a high quality.
The main components of the development involve primary and secondary treatment units, tertiary treatment, sludge digesters unit, as well as biogas treatment and production.
It also includes the electrical and thermal energy production, odors treatment system, in addition to the automatic control and management unit for the station.
Abdullah bin Abdurrahman Al-Husein, NWC chairman and water and electricity minister, said the cost of establishing the project is SAR300m ($79.96m) for period of 34 months.
"The facility will be located on Kharj road to serve Riyadh city with an estimated capacity of 200,000m3 a day," he said.
Loay Al Musallam, NWC CEO, stated: "The national water company has secured help from international consultancy firms specialised in this field to support the technical evaluation and provide the necessary support for such a special type of projects to ensure the selection of integrated solutions.
"The project emphasises the use of potential and renewable energy in wastewater and operational programmes to reduce the effects of greenhouse gases on the environment, as well as reduce the pressure on industrial sources of electricity."
