Severn Trent to provide sewage treatment system for Australian patrol boats

UK-based Severn Trent De Nora’s MARINER OMNIPURE Series M55 marine sewage treatment system has been selected for Australian patrol boats.

The company has been awarded a contract to provide its sewage treatment system for a fleet of eight patrol boats that will protect Australia’s borders from maritime threats.

The MARINER OMNIPURE sewage treatment system has been installed on the first newly designed and constructed patrol boat, Cape St George, which has been built by defence prime contractor Austal.

Austal is building the patrol boats fleet for the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service.

The MARINER OMNIPURE M5508 system, which features a bulkhead-mounted arrangement with a zero floor space footprint, can treat about 8,176l of black and gray water every day.

Severn Trent De Nora marine and offshore product line manager Dana Casbeer said the everyday activities aboard vessels produce sewage that can contaminate water quality and affect the overall marine environment.

"In Australia, where environmental protection is key, it is important the sewage treatment systems used aboard boats are extremely reliable and effective," Casbeer added.

"The electrolytic disinfection technology used by the MARINER OMNIPURE generates a powerful oxidant from seawater to effectively disinfect biological wastes, resulting in wastewater effluent quality well within the MEPC.159(55) requirements."

Severn’s 125 sewage treatment system, which was launched in 2010, has been installed aboard various vessel types, ranging from multipurpose vessels and Liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to platform supply vessels (PSVs), yachts, fishing vessels and even floating accommodation houses.
