Sound Global to reconstruct and expand Chinese sewage treatment plant

Hong-Kong-based water and wastewater treatment solutions provider Sound Global has won a contract to reconstruct and expand a sewage treatment plant in Xinjiang, China.

The upgraded plant will be capable of treating 75,000m³ of sewage a day, up from the existing capacity of 50,000m³ a day.

The company will invest CNY153m ($25m) in the project, which it will construct on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis using multi-stage AO technology. The new technology enables the quality of filtrated water to meet the Class I- B standard set out in Discharge Standards on Pollutants from Urban Sewage Treatment Plant (GB18918-2002).

The upgraded sewage treatment plant will meet water requirements for the forestation of nearby barren Yamalike Hill and for the irrigation of green belts of residential areas near Yamalike, as well as for the cooling process in industrial operations and for future landscaping purposes.

Sound Global chairman Wen Yibo said that the sewage treatment plant is the only source of water to irrigate the woods of Yamalike.

"The existing sewage treatment plant still uses the outdated treatment process of biological aerated filtration, and, limited by its aging equipment and obsolete technology, its actual treatment capacity is slightly more than 40,000m³ per day, which is incapable of meeting the increasing demand of irrigation water," Yibo added.

"The commencement of this project will provide strong support for the irrigation of Yamalike, play a significant role in improving the local ecosystem, as well as reducing urban pollution, thus enabling Yamalike to fulfill its function as the ‘green landscape’ of Urumqi City."
