SourceOne upgrades Deer Island wastewater treatment plant

17 October 2011

Veolia Energy North America's subsidiary SourceOne has completed upgrade works for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority's (MWRA) Deer Island wastewater treatment plant in Boston, US.

The Deer Island plant is part of the MWRA's $3.8bn programme to protect Boston Harbor against pollution from Boston's sewer systems.

SourceOne worked with the MWRA to install a new 1.1MW back pressure steam turbine generator that will exhaust at 15psig and serve the plant and heat loop, while generating additional power.

The generator will enable the MWRA to take advantage of excess produced heat and enable other process efficiency improvements.

The plant treats approximately 350 million gallons of wastewater each day from 43 communities in greater Boston.
