South Africa has opened the largest seawater desalination plant in the Western Cape province, which has a capacity of 15 million megalitres a day.
The $25m project has been jointly funded by the National Treasury and PetroSA, with contributions of $11m and $9.6m respectively.
Currently, the plant produces five million megalitres of water, which is consumed by the PetroSA's synthetic petroleum plant.
The desalination plant has the capacity to meet the entire Mossel Bay town's water usage, accounting for 14 million megalitres a day, reports bizcommunity.com.
