Suez wins wastewater treatment contract in Czech Republic

France-based utility giant Suez Environnement and its regional water firm SPVS have won a five-year contract for operating wastewater networks and purification stations in the region of Šumperk in Czech Republic.

The contract, which is operational from this month, is valued at €25m, Suez said.

The French firm had been operating in the region since 2001 via the regional company and was a part of upgrades for regional wastewater treatment infrastructures, especially in the major towns of Šumperk, Mohelnice, Zábreh, Hanušovice and Loštice.

The projects, which were 75% co-funded from the ISPA fund and the European Union’s Cohesion Fund, involved 78km of wastewater network development, along with rehabilitation of 31km of existing networks and the modernisation of wastewater treatment plants.

Suez delivers potable water to more than 81,000 people in the Šumperk region and is responsible for treating wastewater for around 64,000 people.

Suez has also started construction works for extension project of the wastewater treatment plant in the Czech capital Prague.

The firm will have a share of €57m from the €217m contract, which was signed in 2011.

The new facility will be constructed on Cisarsky Ostrov island and has been designed to have a capacity for treating 345,000m³ of water per day.
