Toray Industries has secured an order to provide reverse osmosis (RO) membrane elements to the Tuaspring desalination plant in Singapore.
Toray is scheduled to provide its RO membrane elements to the project this year, 2012. Under the 25-year contract, Tuaspring, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Hyflux, has agreed to oversee the design, build and operating services of the plant.
The plant, expected to commence operations in the next year, will have a water production capacity of 318,500 cubic meters a day.
Singapore is implementing a four national taps policy, which includes local catchment water, imported water, NEWater and desalinated water, for the establishment of a sustainable water supply system.
Under the policy, the Singapore Government is expanding the area for water catchment while promoting expanded use of reclaimed water produced by Singapore's Public Utilities Board and enhancement of water desalination facilities.
This will be done to reduce the country's dependency on the water import agreement with its neighbour Malaysia, which is scheduled to expire in 2061.
Toray produces a full line of RO, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration and microfiltration membranes developed with its own technology.
