The US Marine Corps will install a Living Machine system at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego to recycle blackwater for sub-surface irrigation and minimise water usage.
The system will extract wastewater from an existing sewer line at the MCRD base and treat it to meet rigorous water reuse standards in the state of California.
The system will process around 10,000 gallons of sewer-mined wastewater every day.
Will Kirksey, Living Machine Systems global development officer, said that by reducing demand for imported freshwater and the need to lay new pipelines, the systems can increase water availability in drought-prone areas cost-effectively and reduce the burden of water restrictions.
