Veolia wins contract from AngloGold Ashanti to operate water treatment facility in Ghana

French resource management firm Veolia has signed an agreement with mining firm AngloGold Ashanti, to optimise, operate and maintain a water treatment plant at the latter’s Iduapriem open-pit gold mine in Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, Ghana.

Veolia Ghana, a subsidiary of Veolia, will offer the services at the existing water treatment facility for a duration of two years.

Water is used at the Iduapriem mine for a number of activities, including mineral processing, dust suppression and slurry transport.

The open-pit gold mine produces around 220,000oz of gold annually and has a recovery factor of almost 95.8%.

Extreme seasonal variations in temperature or rainfall and the alternation of dry and wet seasons in the area necessitates efficient water management, in order to avoid flooding, water contamination and safety issues in the mine.

Veolia executive vice-president for Africa and the Middle East said: "Veolia’s global presence in mining and strong commitment in both the mining industry and Africa has given AngloGold Ashanti the confidence to outsource its water management to Veolia.

"This contract confirms the added-value solutions and expertise that our group provides to its mining clients so that their processes can comply with the highest standards, in particular the environment, while improving the efficiency of their operations."
