Austrian firm to construct new sewage treatment plant in Saudi Arabia

VA TECH WABAG Austria will build a new sewage treatment plant worth €15.4m for the city of Madinah in Saudi Arabia.

The facility will employ conventional mechanical pre-treatment and biological treatment using the activated sludge process, in combination with tertiary filtration, to treat the municipal wastewater.

It will also employ the downstream wastewater filtration that will allow the reuse of the treated water for agricultural irrigation purposes and also help to protect natural water resources in an arid region.

About 200,000m3 per day of municipal wastewater will be treated at the new sewage treatment plant that will provide advanced wastewater disposal for around one million people.

WABAG secured the contract in late 2011 from MASCO, the general contractor for the the Ministry of Water and Electricity of Saudi Arabia.

The contract requires WABAG to oversee the design, engineering and supply of the plant, as well as the supervision of installation.

WABAG will complete work on the facility in the next year.
