Israel-based Yissum Research Development has developed a new biological solution for purifying contaminated water.
The new biological solution uses bacteria as novel bio-filters to reduce high nitrate levels in both freshwater and seawater.
Bio-filters will consist of novel polymer carrier beads loaded with denitrifying bacteria, which allow for the removal of nitrates from water.
The solution is applicable to water-purification systems for aquariums and nitrate-contaminated bodies of water.
Yissum is currently conducting tests on this technology for treating large amounts of water and in purifying wells of groundwater by removing nitrate.
Yissum is the technology-transfer arm of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
