Yorkshire Water is planning to invest £20m for the modernisation of water treatment works on the River Rother, which flows in England from Pilsley, near Chesterfield, to Rotherham.
The funds will be used for renovating the Old Whittington works on the River Rother, a heavily polluted watercourse.
The Old Whittington works, north of Chesterfield, serves around 96,000 people, reports Yorkshire Post.
Work will include the installation of automated sewage treatment machinery, which will be operated and run from Yorkshire Water's headquarters in Bradford.
Dani Munton, Yorkshire Water spokesman, said the modernisation works at the plant will have a huge impact on the quality of the treated water, which is then discharged, and will also improve the plant's operational effectiveness and efficiency.
